Equipment

What surfboard should I hire?+

Your surfboard selection is very important. You should ALWAYS, start on a large beginner board, as these have plenty of buoyancy and extra stability, allowing you to catch plenty of waves and practice standing up. However, if you are relatively light and your board has too much buoyancy, when you try to control the board by shifting your weight you will have little to no effect, resulting in many nose dives and an uncontrollable board. All our boards on our site have a detailed description telling you the recommended experience (beginner to advanced) and weight. Additionally, we'd be happy to help you select the perfect board for you, just drop us a message or give us a call anytime.

Can I swap my equipment?+

Of course, we offer free equipment swap deliveries throughout your hire duration. Whether you need the size up on your wetsuit or require different boards for larger conditions, we'd be happy to help and get you back in the water ASAP.

Do I need boots?+

Boots make the difference in colder conditions as well as providing an extra layer of protection on your feet. With boots, you'll be able to surf for longer allowing you to make the most of those waves. The months we strongly recommend boots are January → April.

Sea Temperature

Is it too cold to surf in Cornwall?+

You may be surprised to hear that you can surf all year round in Cornwall. Despite the colder conditions between January -> and April, we are always running surf lessons and delivering surf hire. Between these months the sea temperature in Cornwall ranges between 8-10 ℃. There's no lying, that's cold when you are in the sea for hours at a time. However, with a winter suit usually a couple of millimetres thicker in places, a pair of boots and some bravery, this is no problem at all. In fact, surfing in winter leads to less overcrowding, more advanced waves and the utmost respect.

Lessons

Should I book a lesson?+

If you've never surfed before, we strongly recommend a surf lesson. Surfing can be very dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. In our beginner surf lessons, you'll be taught everything you need to know about safety, catching waves, trim (balance & positioning) and one of the hardest things to do, stand up on a wave. It's always a good decision to use a lesson as a base to begin your surfing experiences, as you may get into bad habits and be stuck on certain skills for years. Additionally, surfing is a lot like skiing, with white water being your beginner runs and large clean waves being your black runs. To speed up your progression going to an expert and having a lesson is the best to get you shredding on those clean waves.

Do I have to hire the equipment for my lesson first?+

No, the price of the surf lesson includes all the equipment you'll need. Just fill in the details on the booking page and we will be in touch shortly to discuss times for your Newquay surf lesson.

Do you have more advanced lessons?+

We offer a wide range of lessons from never surfed before to clean wave manoeuvring. For those surfers who want to progress beyond the white water, try our back-to-back lessons on our surf course. These focus on the key skill you will need to be out back surfing on clean waves.

Which beach will my lesson be on?+

We currently only do surf lessons at Fistral Beach at the south end. However, check in with us as we are always looking to expand to more areas.

We follow full government guidance, wipe down all boards and sanitise the wetsuits. You can get a full refund on any cancelled booking up to 24 hours before your holiday.

What if it is a red flag day at the beach? +

Due to harsh conditions, thunder and fog, beaches can be red-flagged by the RNLI and closed down. You will be refunded for any red-flagged days which prevent you from surfing. This can be frustrating when you've come down with the main aim of surfing. However, Newquay has a few beaches which are more sheltered than Fistral and may be surfable/better for the current conditions. Check out our "Newquay Surf Guide" on our blogs to teach you which beach you should be surfing on for the current conditions.
